FAQs

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

What kind of popcorn do you use?

Believe it or not there are several different kinds of popcorn, each one having a unique shape and ideal application for snacking.  At Barney’s we use mushroom popcorn, known for its large, round, uniform shape.  Each kernel pops into large puffy “mushroom” like shapes that have a higher surface area to be able to coat evenly with caramel, candy, or savory flavors.  That means you are getting a more consistent crunch with maximum flavor in every bite!

Do you use oil to pop your popcorn?

Nope!  We air pop our popcorn to create a lighter kernel and reduce the fat content when we can.  (We had to do something to offset all that delicious butter we use!)

Why does your popcorn cost more than the competition?

We will never be the cheapest snacking option.  This is the result of both our passion for real ingredients (like butter, sugar, fruits, nuts, etc.) and our commitment to paying living wages and providing opportunities for our friends and neighbors with disabilities to be able to thrive.  The good news is that with every purchase of a Barney’s Sweet Shop snack you can trust that you are getting something that we made with the best ingredients while providing upward economic mobility for our staff, especially our team members with disabilities.  Your purchase helps us to Make Life Sweeter…..for everyone!

How long will my popcorn last?

Great question.  There are several things to consider here.  First of all, when we make your popcorn we use high quality ingredients and a natural preservative that helps the popcorn to be shelf stable for six months.  You’ll see a date marked on the back of the package that lets you know when it is best to be eaten by.  We also include small desiccant packets in each bag to help mitigate any moisture that could potentially cause your popcorn to not be as crisp as possible.
Our packages are heat sealed for freshness and are made of plastic that creates a good vapor barrier to prevent air from permeating the package.  Should you be the rare snack enthusiast who doesn’t eat the whole bag in one sitting (kuddos to you for your self control), be sure to tightly reseal the bag and push out any extra air to keep it fresh, and store in a cool dry space.
Speaking of storage, how you store your popcorn can also determine how long it stays fresh.  We use real butter and real sugar (the good stuff) in our recipes and as you know - these things can melt.  And melted sugar and butter become soft.  So if your popcorn gets too hot (say sitting in your car, or in the sun on a hike) it can cause the caramel to melt and soften, which will add moisture back into the popcorn and cause it to be soft.  The good news is that there are things any popcorn lover can do to crisp it back up.  First of all let your package cool at home where your AC is doing it’s good work to keep you nice and cool.  Let the product cool off and you’ll find it hardens back up.  The popcorn will likely be stuck together, simply give the bag a good squeeze and the kernels will pop apart.
If your caramel is still sticky simply place it on a cookie sheet in the oven at 250 degrees for about 15 minutes.  Then let it cool COMPLETELY and you’ll have a nice crunchy treat ready to enjoy.

Can I heat up my caramel corn to eat it hot?

We actually get asked this question quite a bit.  I know it seems like hot, fresh caramel corn seems like it would be dreamy, but it’s actually not great at all.  Unlike it’s movie theater counterpart which is best served piping hot and dripping in butter - caramel corn is a cool character.  If you heat it up, whether intentionally, or accidentally, then the butter and sugar will melt, releasing moisture that makes the perfectly popped kernels become a soggy mess.  Some folks mistakenly think that means the popcorn is “stale”, when in actuality it’s just melted.  Strange, I know.
Should you find yourself with some warm, less than crispy caramel corn FEAR NOT! Simply place it on a cookie sheet in the oven at 250 degrees for 15 minutes. Then let it cool completely and you’ll be back in peak snacking form.
